January 1996, Evening:
5 floormates, who were at one point in time complete strangers,
got the news - their dream house that Marnie went and stared at
during fire alarms was going to be all theirs. One problem
though: it was a six bedroom house. Despite all warnings that it
is generally a mistake to do this, the five girls spent a
desparate night trying to find someone who would be willing to
sign the lease the next day. They were fortunate enough to find
Karen, a terrific friend from Sara's high school days and just
crazy enough to agree to move in with four people she had never
met.
Move Forward to June 1997:
We've now been living together for a whole year, and we've never
been happier. To everyone from our floor who was waiting for the
cat fights to start, you better pay up because you've lost the
bet! Yes 6 girls and 2 bathrooms is possible (of course, 4 phone
lines doesn't hurt!). I think one of our shining moments was our fabulous Christmas drop-in. Yes, we
honestly had 70 people in that house over the course of the
evening and only one beer was ever seen (and we still got people
singing "there was an old lady who swallowed a fly" at
the end of it!). We spent days baking and preparing the house,
and there was barely anything to clean up the next day. Next
year's going to be even better because we have a tree!
Halfway Point: December 1997:
A year and a half of living together down,
another year and a half to go. So what has been happening so far
this year? Well, we've learned lots more things, we've spent WAY
too many nights at Alfie's (but I still refuse to leave until I
hear the "Barbie" song!), we have discovered the mecca
of "Toys R Us", Marnie and I have spent far too many
hours in the lab to produce one map, amoung many other things
that we have done. We have also proven our social status (and
adopted the persona of "street captains") by throwing
three awesome parties: a neighbour social (where we proved our
baking skills once again), a neighbour BBQ, and of course, our
infamous Christmas drop-in - there was more food then last year
and even a gingerbread house! What's in store for next term?
You'll have to wait and see...
March, 1998:
Who would have guessed that we started off
the year with a natural disaster? Ah well, it was fun while it
lasted. And our house actually withstood the ice - it is a
miracle! Unfortunately, our neighbour took a fear to trees and
has decided to chain down every tree he sees (does he really
think lightening is going to strike twice?). As much as we have
tried to avoid it, the Spice Girls have invaded our
household...everyone has been given there role (sorry, Marn,
you'll have to be the manager, there's only 5 Spice Girls!). The
latest things learned is finally up, and maybe I'll get around to
some more recent photos, if you're lucky (once school's done!)
March, 1999: Okay, so it's been a whole year since I've updated this thing. As as we are less than two months from leaving this place, it's about time, a few final words of wisdom were placed up here. One housemate has graduated, and another one has come in (hi Amanda!). We've finally perfected the art of procrastination in our final year (Alex, you are the god of Jeopardy). We managed to survive leaving the country, meeting the Big Cheese ("Hey Mickey, you're so fine..."), and getting back here all in one piece. Our nylons and lipstick managed to last for the duration of the formal (despite blizzard conditions). And our house is starting to come apart at the seams as the packing fury begins. So while you're here, sit back, relax, and look back over the things we have learned in our three years in this house.
